The Hate Crimes Task Force bill will be heard in committee on Thursday Jan. 29. Please join us at 9:30AM to urge the legislature to improve the bill's provisions regarding the selection of members to ensure balance and accountability not only to the victims but the whole community of reasonably minded residents. There are other areas that can be improved, e.g., funding the task force, etc.... Please note that Leg. Gregory's introduction of this bill is a marked departure from the slew of anti-Latino/ immigrant bills that have emanated from the SC Legislature. We have met with Leg. Gregory and have shared our positive recognition of his authorship of the bill and the intent to examine the process or lack thereof for responding to hate crimes, and he has been amenable. Atached is a copy of the bill with some changes that Leg. Gregory has made.
FYI if the bill gets out of committee on the 29th, it will go to the full legislature on the 3rd of February, so plan in advance to be present.
Pat Young will send a message for a conference/telemeeting to discuss the provisions of the bill. Please let me know if you're interested in the telemeeting.
Thank you.
