Action Needed! Call on Congress to Support the “Strengthening Communities Through Education and Integration Act of 2008”

In July, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA) and Rep. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) introduced legislation to address the educational barriers and integration challenges faced by communities across the country.  The Strengthening Communities through Education and Integration Act of 2008 (H.R. 6617 and S. 3334) invests resources in Latino children and workers, while encouraging state and local governments to proactively work with new immigrant communities.

MALDEF and our allies in the business, education, faith and civil rights community strongly support this legislation.  Now is the time for you to call on your Senators and Representative to cosponsor H.R. 6617 and S. 3334.

WHAT IS THE STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION AND INTEGRATION ACT OF 2008?

Our members participate in many local events to further the standing of immigrants on Long Island.  We are constantly pursuing and pressing the issues that matter to Long Island’s Immigrant population.  Key issues that LIIA is working on:

1.  Creation of a funding stream for ESL programs

2.  Improved access for health care services, such as translation at hospitals and clinics

3.  Promotion of community safety and building trust between immigrant community and police by ensuring separation between immigration status and local law enforcement and crime reduction activities.

4.  Protection of workers’ rights through local enforcement of labor laws against exploitative employers.

5.  Promotion of civic engagement among new citizens through support of voter registration efforts and language access at polls.

Long Island Immigrant Alliance Mission :

The Long Island Immigrant Alliance is an alliance of diverse community, religious, labor, and immigrant organizations working together in solidarity with all immigrants who are an integral part of our Long Island communities. We support them in their struggle wherever they live on Long Island, and we affirm their legal and human rights. We are committed to shared leadership, and to using our collective strength to oppose hatred so that the communities involved can have their needs and concerns met peacefully, fairly, and justly. The alliance will engage all Long Islanders in order to overcome the voices of extremism, division, and hatred.
